What kind of damage do rodents cause in an attic?

Rodents can be a real nuisance around your house. They will try to get into your garbage cans, eat your pet’s food, and can destroy your garden. They are truly little critters that you could do without.



However, this is nothing in comparison to what they can do should they get into the attic of your home. Surprisingly, these animals get into a person’s attic a lot more than you would think. By using a cracked board or a hole in the siding as access into the attic, many rodents, including such things as raccoons and squirrels, can easily find their way into the upper room of your home.

This is such an ideal location for them because most people don’t spend a lot of time in their attic. The rodent gets a great deal of solitude and can build a nest there without worrying about being interrupted or discovered. Add to it the fact that many people store such things as close, blankets, and books in their attic, and it is easy to see why this is such a perfect location for a rodent to build a nest.

The problem is that these animals can do a great deal of damage in your attic. If you are storing materials in there, you can be sure that they are going to be tearing them up in order to build a nest. This can mean that those newspaper clippings that you have been storing, your wedding dress, old textbooks, and clothing that you have can all be torn up by the rodent to use for its nest.

Sadly, that is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the damage that these animals can do. They can destroy your insulation, not only by using is a nest but also by releasing their waste into it as well. Rodents carry a large number of pathogens in their bodies, which are released whenever they go to the bathroom, and so the cleanup that you will have to remove out their waste once you have remove the animal is something that truly is terrific. Not only do you have to clean up the waste itself, but any materials that have been touched by the waste has to either be thoroughly clean or completely removed to protect the health of you and your family. This can be quite costly.

You also have the concern that many rodents will chew on wood and other materials that they may find in your attic. This can mean that walls and even ceiling boards can be damaged by these animals gnawing on the wood areas. This can cause you a lot of damage to your home and can mean that you have to do a considerable amount of work to be able to restore the luster of your home again.

The damage to your home caused by rodents can be quite substantial. This is why it pays to make sure that you do a thorough search of your attic at least four or five times a year to make sure that no rodent has made a home out of your home.
