Do more rodents live in urban areas, or wild areas?

Something that may be a big surprise to you is that there are more rodents found in urban areas then you would find in the wild. You may think that that is true in some cases, but when you look at some of the larger sized rodents you would find it impossible to believe that a raccoon or a possum would be found in greater populations in the urban areas around the globe that they would be in the wild before us or near farmland. That may seem like the logical idea, instead wrong.

Starting with smaller sized rodents, like rats and mice, it is easy to see why they are thriving in the urban areas. These kinds of critters have followed human beings everywhere they go, and have used human beings as their primary means of protection. People not only built structures that these animals can use as their own homes, but also provide an endless supply of food for the rodents to eat. We throw away so much that a rat can enjoy that are garbage alone is enough to feed them.

That’s not the end of it, however. Many other kinds of rodents, including such things as possums and raccoons are able to benefit from human invention as well. A rat is not the only kind of critter that would find your garbage to be the ideal meal for it. Raccoons love to get in the trash cans of people, and find that your waste is a good meal for them.

In addition, they will live in such locations as sheds, barns, and even inside your attic if they can get in. The truth of the matter is that raccoons thrive and live longer in the urban areas around the globe than they do in rural settings. This is true of the possum as well.

What you need to understand is that it is not just about food and shelter that ensure that these animals do so well in the urban regions of the world. What helps these animals to survive and prosper so well is because what is missing in urban areas. In most cases man is the only creditor that threatens their existence. You rarely see a coyote, mountain lion, or bear wandering the streets of San Antonio or Denver, so a raccoon or possum can live there without very much concern about some other animal causing it problems. It is true that your dog may bark at or even scare off one of these rodents, but they will rarely attack them out right. Therefore, the lack of a true predator in this area ensures greater safety for these rodents.

Man has done so much to actually improve the life quality of rodents that it is beyond words. We provide the food and shelter they need, and also give them the protection by creating areas where other predators are unable to prosper. We may not love these rodents, but they clearly love us.
