Human beings are interesting and quite unique from other animals and that they love to have different kinds of critters as pets. You don’t see a dog really caring for a rat or hamster, or a cat looking after a bird, but human beings will bring home dogs and cats to make a part of their family. It is one of the truly unique and adorable aspects about people.
What adds to that is that it is not just cats and dogs that make the perfect pet for some. Human beings love to have the odd kind of pet as well. Such things as snakes, tarantulas, and even monkeys have become the pets to many people. There are those who love their pet lion or bear, and some have even gone as far as to have an alligator. It is kind of strange the kind of pants that people will look after.
Rodents are another class of animals that many people will choose as pets. It is not uncommon to find that a person has hamster, rat, or mouse, these are some of the most common pets that you will find in people’s homes today. This may make you wonder if rodents actually make good pets?
As has just been shown, there are many species of rodents that make ideal pets. In fact, if you were to visit your local pet store you would find all kinds of cages that are specifically designed for a person to care for a rat, a hamster, or a mouse. Many even breed these animals, bringing home a male and female in finding that in a few short weeks that their pair of rodents has now grown to 10 or 12.
However, do all rodents make good pets? The answer to that is no.
For the most part, rodents are wild animals. Nobody has ever really domesticated a raccoon or a possum, which means that there are huge risks that come with trying to care for one of these animals. Wild animals are quite unpredictable, and can easily lash out at you, causing you severe injury.
In addition, many of these animals carry a number of pathogens that pose a risk to you, your family, and your pets. Their waste alone is dangerous, even if you just breathe it in, and so it makes it so that they are not safe to have as pets.
It is true that there are those who have successfully domesticated some of these kinds of animals and keep them in their homes. However, you should be aware that the vast majority of people who have tried this have usually wound up suffering the consequences in their attempt to domesticate these rodents.
If you want to be smart about this, there are animals that make much better pets. Yes, it is true that a raccoon is an adorable animal, but that does not mean it would make a good pet for you. You are better off choosing a cat or a dog.
