What if you are bitten by a rat

There are many people who own rats as personal pets. They have gone to the pet store and purchased a rat or a group of them, place them in a cage, and if cared for them through the years. While not the most appealing pet to many people, there are those out there who find these to be remarkable animals that are a great addition to their family. They are fun to watch and quite easy to take care of to be quite honest.

While these can be very friendly animals and easy to take care of, there may be times that your pet will bite at your skin. Because of the fact that you purchased it at a pet store, you rarely, if at all, have to worry about the rat bite causing you a serious illness. These animals have been tested and usually come from some kind of lineage that ensures that you are not at any risk. If you were, they could not sell them at the pet store.

However, this is not true if you are bitten by a wild rat. If you are out in your garage, and your attic, or outside somewhere in a rat bites you, then this is an entirely different story. You could actually be in quite a bit of danger, which makes you wonder what you should do if you are bitten by a rat?

First of all, understand that many rats carry illnesses and diseases that can be dangerous to you. Rats carry pathogens that directly cause illness in human beings, and even carry a number of parasites. If they are to bite you, they transfer these parasites directly into your bloodstream, meaning that these viruses or bacteria are now working their way through your body where they can cause serious illness to you. These cannot only be a source that can make you ill, but they can actually cause your death.

Knowing this, it is essential that you get treated right away. Waiting even for a matter of a day can be life-threatening to you, and so this is not a time to procrastinate.

Your first step is to ensure that you do not panic. That is easier said than done, but the truth is that when you panic you increase the rate of your heart, which means the rate of transfer of this pathogen around your body speeds up as well. So, relax and take a deep breath, before taking any action.

Next, make sure that you get to a treatment facility like a hospital or urgent care clinic as quickly as possible. This is not a time to be calling your family physician and setting up an appointment. You need emergency medical treatment right away. Thus, take yourself to the nearest hospital or emergency clinic to be treated. If you are able to give information about where the rat can be located, this can be beneficial to you as well. Regardless, make sure you get medical attention. Read more: Rat Control, Get Rats Out of the Attic, Rat Trapping, Rats in the Ceiling, Rat Feces.
