One of the most common things that happen to homeowners over time is that small cracks in their roof or siding or small leaks in their pipes can lead to water dripping down into the attic of their home. This may not be an issue in the first week or two when it happens, but over time this can cause some serious issues in your home. This can cause a lot of serious issues, such as deterioration in the flooring, ruining of your insulation, and corruption of the floorboards in the attic.
These are obviously very serious issues that over time can create a lot of problems for your home. However, the one greatest concern that you may have is in relation to mold. Mold not only can damage and destroy your home, but can cause very serious health issues for you, your family, and your pets. This can lead to all kinds of respiratory illnesses that you may encounter and can eventually cause you to become quite sick, even permanently.
One of the biggest challenges of mold is that you may not even be aware of it for quite some time. It is when you first start to notice the black or green splotches that you finally recognize that mold may be in your home. By that point it may have been there for months or years. You want to get rid of it as quickly as possible, but how do you get rid of mold in the attic?
The first part to understand is that you have to play this safe. That can mean getting rid of everything that has mold on it. This can mean that your insulation, your floorboards, your drywall, blankets, old clothing, and books may simply have to be thrown away. Some kinds of molds can be very difficult to get rid of and simply washing them off with bleach will not do the job.
There may be parts of your property that you cannot simply throw away. If this is the case, you can start with household cleaners such as bleach to wipe away the mold. In most cases this will kill any mold that may exist on the wall or other item that you have. Don’t just wipe the surface wants and expect that to do the job. You will need to do this at least once a week over the next month or two to ensure that you have thoroughly done the job.
You should also ensure that you have opened up the wall if there is mold on the drywall itself you will need to thoroughly clean out any area in the attic where the mold can fester. There are great commercial cleaners you can get that will really do the job to ensure the mold is defeated.
Lastly, you will want to ensure that you have resolved the problem. It doesn’t make any sense to clean out your attic if you do not handle where the leak began in the first place. You may need a professional to fix this issue for you.
