Skunks are much like many other wild animals that you may see around your home. They simply want a place to live and, sadly, they may find that your home makes for the perfect location for where they can set up residence. There are a wide variety of places that they can find that seem ideal, and so no place is really that safe. This includes you attic, under your porch, inside your shed, or even in a pile of lumber that is covered by a tarp.
One place that is a little more on the usual side but that they skunk will use is the window well. These actually make for quite a perfect home for many reasons, primarily because they are a spot where they believe that they will be left alone. If the window well is the window to your basement and you do not go in your basement that much, they can stay in there for quite some time virtually undisturbed.
Obviously, you do not want this animal living there. Not only do you have to worry about it spraying you or your pet, but the diseases that they carry will be dangerous to you and your family as well. That animal simply has to go.
But how do you go about doing this? You can’t simply try to run out there and scare it off. Skunks are not very afraid of humans, and when it turns around to get ready to spray you, it will be you that will be running the other way. There has to be a much better alternative.
Well, there is. It requires you to be a little patient, but you can get rid of the skunk and keep him or her from coming back. What you need to do is to get a board that will cover that window well and some rocks that you can put on top of it that are heavy enough to make it impossible to move the board.
Next, you want to put some really bright lights in the window inside your basement. Face them so that they are shining right out toward the window well, but do not turn them on yet.
When it is turning to dusk, crank those lights on. The bright lights will startle the skunk and, since it is getting dark, it will run off. That is when you need to spring into action. Take the board and place it over the window well and put the rocks on top. Make sure that there is no open area for the skunk to sneak back into.
It is a good idea to leave a bright light shining directly onto that place all night long. That will keep the skunk from returning and force it to look elsewhere for a home.
