Are skunks dangerous to cats, dogs, or other pets?

The skunk is an animal that virtually every human being will do everything that they can to stay away from. Because of the horrific odor that they are able to release from glands near the tail end of this critter, it can be of extreme importance to stay as far away from this beast as possible. When they are frightened, they will turn and fire away, leaving you smelling like hell for a week or so, and making it so that your eyes will water for days. It is one of the most unbearable things that a human being can endure.

To be honest, it is not any better for your pet. Whether you are talking about a cat, dog, or some other kind of pet that you may have, the last thing you want is for them to be sprayed by a skunk. In fact, it’s the last thing your pet would want as well. They don’t like the smell or the irritation that is caused to their eyes either.

The problem with your pet coming in contact with the skunk is that this is not the only concern that you will have should a skunk come into your yard. Skunks pose other risks to your pet, which may make you wonder if a skunk is dangerous to your dog, cat, or other pet?

The truth of the matter is that they are. Skunks have very sharp front claws and sharp teeth as well, which can be extremely hazardous to your pet. Should it come in contact with a skunk, the defense of this rodent is not simply to use their spray. They can fight back, and can be quite aggressive at times as well. This can mean that your pet can be severely injured by a bite or scratch from one of these little critters.

What makes the situation even worse is that skunks are the carriers of many different kinds of diseases. This includes such things as rabies, which can be transferred from the skunk and into your pet through a scratch or bite. This is why it is imperative that you do all that you can to keep your pet away from one of these critters.

One other concern that you should have is that even the feces and urine of a skunk can be dangerous to your pet. Just by touching the dried urine or feces, parasites can be spread into your pet, endangering their health. These parasites will burrow into the skin, enter the bloodstream, and set up their own residence within the digestive track or the heart of your animal. In either way, this is extremely dangerous to the health of your pet.

Should your animal come in contact with the skunk and is injured in any way, it is a great idea if you take him or her to the veterinarian as soon as possible. There is no sense in taking any kind of risk in the situation; your pet’s life may depend upon it. Read more: Skunk Control, how to kill skunks.
