What should I do if I find an orphaned baby skunk wandering about?

You may walk across your lawn one day or look out in to your backyard and find that there is a baby skunk walking along. While this is an unusual site, it does happen at times, and leaves you with a few options as to what to do.

First of all, if this baby is all alone it likely means that the mother is dead or that she has abandoned it. This means that it is all alone, and that is not a good situation for a baby animal, even for a skunk. Baby animals do not normally know how to care for themselves yet, so they will not have the requisite skills that are needed to be able to survive on their own.

Your natural instinct is to want to care for a baby animal, but this is a skunk after all. No one really wants to help skunks, even if the baby animal is not able to spray yet. The babies do not have the mature glands to be able to produce that horrific spray, so you don’t have to worry about that, but they will get to that point one day, and do you want to care for an animal like this that will likely turn on you one day?

You may not find it appetizing to care for the skunk yourself, which you should not do, but you don’t want to just leave this orphaned baby animal outside. You know if you do that it is in a lot of trouble. Here are your choices if you want to help.

You should start by contacting your local city or county animal control. Even if they do not help you directly, they will have suggestions of places that may be able to help you. They still may be willing to pick up the animal or be willing to take it from you if you bring it to them.

This is true of the local wildlife preserve as well. They will most definitely be willing to take the animal off of your hands if you bring it to them. For a small fee, they will take the animal, care for it, and make sure that it finds a home someplace where it is able to successfully make it in the wild or on their preserve. These places are amazing to be honest.

Lastly, in all honesty, you can do nothing. Keep in mind that this is a skunk, and it is not like if it is dies that world is a worse place. That is just one less of these horrible animals that will have to be dealt with, so you should not feel guilty about this option at all. If it dies it dies.
