Are raccoons dangerous to cats, dogs, or other pets?

A raccoon seems like a cuddly enough little critter. Since they were first discovered here in the New World, these animals have become a popular little rodent for several reasons. Not only were they essential in helping to keep people warm, by turning their for them to such things as coats and hats, but they also were a primary source to fill the dietary needs that people had when they came to this country.



While they may look like a cute little critter, the fact of the matter is that these animals can be quite dangerous to you and your family. The problem with them actually goes beyond this, and may make you wonder if raccoons are dangerous to your cat, dog, or other kinds of pets? The answer is, without a doubt, and absolute yes!

Start with the most obvious of the problems that you face. You must first realize that a raccoon is a wild animal. Wild animals will react in a very aggressive manner if they need or feel the need to protect themselves. This can mean that they will scratch or bite your pet to defend themselves, which can cause serious injury.

If you consider for a moment that a raccoon is a road, then it is easy to understand the kind of damage that they can create. They have very sharp teeth, and their front claws are quite sharp as well as they need these to be able to dig as well as defend themselves. With weapons like these your cat, dog, or other pet can be seriously hurt.

That is not the only issues you face, however. Raccoons are known to carry a large number of parasites and diseases in them, which can also be dangerous to your pet. One of the most serious of these is rabies, which is believed that 20% of all raccoons carry. If your animal is bitten or scratched by a raccoon that has rabies and you are unaware of this at first, then it will always lead to death for your pet. This disease is that serious, and is one of the reasons why you need to ensure that your pet stays away from this rodent.

If that was not bad enough on its own, you also need to be aware that the feces of a raccoon is dangerous to your dog, cat, or other pet. Often, there are parasites inside the feces that can pose a serious health risk to your cat or dog. If they are to step in the feces then the parasite can attach to them and burrow its way into their bloodstream work and risk their health, even their life.

It is for reasons like this that it is important to ensure that if a raccoon is coming around your property that you do all that you can to deter it from returning.
